How To Get Internet When You Have No Internet

Posted by Olayinka Alawode on

For travelers and digital nomads, there’s no way of telling if the next destination your adventure takes you to has internet service or not. Visiting a remote area doesn’t mean you have to be cut off from civilization. With modern technology, you can live in a remote area and still be connected to the rest of the world.

However, should you find yourself in a situation without internet, it is good to have a backup plan in mind so that you don’t have to stay a day or more without an internet connection.

Here are some ways you can stay connected when you have no internet;

  • Satellite Internet

For travelers and people who live in remote locations, satellite internet has been a lifesaver. RV satellite systems are also a great alternative too. Although setting it up can be a little bit expensive, no matter where you decide to camp your RV, satellite systems can get you a good network even in the most remote boondocking area.

There are, however, other disadvantages to satellite internet besides the price. Firstly, weather can impact your signal. On those rainy, snowy, windy, or stormy days, you may not have an internet connection. You need a clear view of the sky to hit the satellite.

Another disadvantage with satellite internet is that, when using certain applications, your internet may become slow or lag. Latency issues will usually occur when streaming or using heavy applications.

  • Boost Hotspot with External Routers

Although this route may take a bit of construction and may require above-ground installation to pull in a signal, it should work if you do it right. If you have a line of sight to a mobile broadband repeater, you can get yourself a 3G or 4G hotspot device.

Now, to increase your range to ensure that you get a strong connection for all your online activities, you need to combine the hotspot device with a WiFi antenna and an amplifier. Note that this method will only work if you are close enough to pull in the WiFi signal. This method is way cheaper than satellite internet and has higher speeds than most cell phone plans.

Another advantage is that you can enjoy the internet with your family and friends as this method allows quick and easy connection of multiple devices.

  • Internet via Ham radio

Long before the existence of the internet, Ham radio operators used the internet of their own called Packet Radio. Ham radio operators used Packet Radio to send files, update bulletin board systems, send text messages and control remote systems and networks.

Although this method is not practical for large downloads and streaming, in case of emergencies, by building a repeater network that allows you to access the internet through ham radio, you can successfully send the word out to family or friends via messages and emails. Internet via the Ham radio links Packet Radio technology to remote stations to form an ad hoc network known as an emergency internet.

It is important to note that it is not legal to use this method to access certain parts of the internet. And we wouldn’t advise that you trade personal data or passwords via these technologies. This method is only useful for accessing the internet during emergencies.

  • High Gain Antenna

You can get an internet connection by simply pointing a directional high gain antenna directly to the tower. This method uses a classic point-to-point microwave link. The link is created by connecting a receiver and a transmitter to a directional antenna—set up where there is a signal.

Once the link is established, you will have an internet connection fast enough for downloads and streaming. The downside to this method, however, is that it is expensive. Waterproof signal amplifiers and directional antennas cost money.

  • Nomad Internet Routers

Nomad Internet routers are specifically made for travelers and people who live in rural areas. Now, you might be wondering, “how is it that our router can achieve strong internet connections even in places without internet?” I’d tell you.

We provide you high-speed internet connection by combining the latest cellular technology of all major providers with a single plan. All our hotspots and routers connect to nearby cellular towers, thereby providing your device its LTE data connection.

Even if you are miles away from a cellphone tower, our routers are strong enough to provide you with sufficient internet signals. Since our devices broadcast an excellent and efficient signal, multiple devices—including all home and office devices can be connected to a single router.

We offer two main device types. The “Travel Wi-Fi Router” has an inbuilt battery and can be used anywhere you are, and the “Wi-Fi Router” has external antennas so it can achieve faster speeds.

Whether you are visiting or relocating to a rural area, the internet connection shouldn’t be a problem. You can be sure of staying connected to the rest of the world by getting yourself a Nomad Internet router before the move. So, what are you waiting for? Save yourself the stress of performing complicated connections just to get an internet signal. There’s a simple solution. Shop any of our routers at a $25 discount when you use the code WELCOME25.
